If Coffee Shop is a quietly tucked-away café located just a block from Takayama Station, where the slow rhythm of mountain-town life blends with a strong sense of local character. The focus here is straightforward: coffee and atmosphere. You won’t find an extensive menu beyond carefully brewed hot and iced coffees paired with simple but satisfying toast sets featuring ham and cucumber, or light desserts like pumpkin pudding. It’s the kind of place that invites you to pause—opening a window into daily life in this peaceful corner of the Japanese Alps.

The interior suggests a deep appreciation for music, with shelves of vinyl records and musical instruments hinting at the owner’s passion. This lends the space a textured warmth, where the sound of carefully selected tracks—sometimes Leonard Cohen or revered Japanese artists—floats gently around the room as you drink your coffee. This is not a spot for rushing; the café encourages moments of stillness, making it a natural retreat for travelers winding down after exploring the historic town or locals seeking a calm break from their day.

Visitors who are drawn to a cozy, reflective environment will find If Coffee Shop rewarding. The mix of mellow music and the ritual of savoring expertly made coffee turns a simple visit into a small, personal ritual. Morning or late afternoon visits offer the best chance to settle in without the bustle, particularly on quieter days when the street outside mirrors the café’s gentle pace.

In essence, If Coffee Shop thrives on its restrained charm—a coffee-focused experience set within a space shaped by genuine local tastes and a love for music. It’s a spot best appreciated slowly, whether you’re passing through Takayama or looking for a thoughtful way to connect with the town’s quieter side.

This hidden gem was a wonderful place for coffee but most of all for the atmosphere. Be sure to check out the impressive collection of records and instruments, and soak in the excellent music played as you enjoy your coffee.

If you find yourself in Hida-Takayama, consider yourself lucky because it's a charming hamlet in the middle of the Japanese Alps. Yes, there are Alps in Japan. Now there's a variety of reasons why this isolated town was so appealing to us, and one reason why was this unexpected coffeehouse on quiet Hirokoji Street just a block away from Takayama Station as my husband and I were winding down our Alpine stay. We stopped in what we thought was a rather nondescript cafe on the outside, Except the inscription emblazoned on both sides of its corner location: "Blend Coffee & Sweet Soul Music" was intriguing enough for us to enter during their rather constricted hours of 1-6PM when we found ourselves surrounded by immaculately maintained instruments and antique furniture. Vintage albums scattered on a table indicated a clear love of jazz and soul music. You could tell that from the owner Ichiro's quiet demeanor, cool hair, and vast vinyl collection that the cafe reflects his passion. You can hear the scratches on the beloved records he meticulously plays as he served us delicious Iced Coffee for the student-discounted price of ¥500. We were enjoying the chill vibe so much we were openly wondering if a return to Hida-Takayama was in the cards sooner rather than later. COFFEE - 5 stars...brewed and iced to match the chill vibe AMBIANCE - 5 stars...like stepping back into a mid-century music parlor SERVICE - 5 stars...Ichiro is cool TOTAL - 5 stars...step back into the past in Hida-Takayama

Extended my stay in Takayama just so I could visit here and it was absolutely worth it. Spent two hours listening to Leonard Cohen and sipping some of the best coffee I’ve ever had. The owner exudes such warmth and kindness. A cozy, unforgettable experience. 10/10 recommend.

It is very nice to meet you, Ichiro-san! Arigato gozaimasu for sharing with me your love for music, the Japanese music geniuses, Akiko Yano, the professor, and Yellow Magic Orchestra! You have a kind heart and an amazing treasure trove! Wishing you all the best! Hock-san.

The vibe, the coffee, and the service are phenomenal. The owner is really nice, and he played a nice selection of music. I wish I had had time to stop back in to try the iced coffee.

I happened upon this cool cafe just before leaving Takayama. Something told me to pop in so I backtracked and entered hoping to grab a coffee on the go. The owner said they didnt provide takeaway and I should sit a while. Im so Holly I did because its a beautiful cafe, with a story in every corner. Its full of instruments (all owned and played by the owner and inherited like the cafe from his father). If you ask him he will tell you the most beautiful cool story about his father who owned the cafe and fought in the war and hated Americans but found an affinity for American music. Its such a cool story. He's even had guests like Haruomi Hosono of Yellow Magic Orchestra visit! The vibe and aura of the space and the owner is one of the highlights of Takayama city.
